According to news reports here, here, here and here, a Utah jury has awarded plaintiff $3,606,214 in compensatory damages and $60 million in punitive damages against American National Insurance Company. American National plans to appeal, and seems to have a very strong ratio argument especially given the rather substantial compensatory award.

Here's the explanation for the huge punitive damage award: All the deceptions, cover-ups, and other unethical behavior of American National and its agents really bothered the jury! As a witness in the courtroom through a lot of the trial, I know it turned my stomach to see people transparently lying on the stand. American National got what it deserves and I hope they learn their lesson.
